Sustainable seaweed cultivation: North Sea Farm
The ‘North Sea Farm’ is working towards a healthy and more sustainable world. The foundation uses the North Sea Farm as dot on the horizon. Currently, they are about to deliver their ‘proof of concept’: harvesting the first kilogram of seaweed near the ‘Raging bulb’ in the turbulent Dutch North Sea. The next step will be an experimental farm. Marcel Schuttelaar is the man behind this idea. He started his career as an activist, then started a leading consultancy company to help companies making the world a better place. Now he is taking the path of impact investing, although it is more about being a fanatic than an investor. His dream is to build an offshore research institute which will be used for research development, testing and demonstrating concepts. Think about the cultivation of seaweed, fish, shellfish and other flora and fauna. It will also be about renewable energy at sea and multifunctional use of the sea. The Netherlands has always been a country dependend on water and the sea. This is the start of a new ecological area. The sea is full of opportunities.
