Sjaak Deckers’ dream with his company Sapiens Steering Brain Stimulation is clear. Improving the lives of patients with functional brain disorder such as Parkinson’s disease, dystonia, obsessive-compulsive disorders or depression. Sapiens brings a next generation deep brain stimulation therapy: mild electrical pulses are administered via a probe in the brain to reduce the symptoms caused by these neurological diseases. Existing therapies are not precise enough and regularly result in side effects. Early 2011, Deckers started Sapiens as a spin-out of Royal Philips to bring this advanced therapy to patients. Now, after eight Parkinson patients successfully tested in a clinical trial with a prototype probe, Deckers’ dream of successfully implanting the first patient with the Sapiens probe is one step closer to fulfilling his dream.
